Sunray Biography

Sunray was formed in 1993 by Jon Chambers and John Lewis. The band’s early home demos attracted the attention of Vince Boyd at Watercolour Records, and the same year Sunray made their debut appearance at the Vertigo Club in London supporting Watercolour Records’ The Field Trip. The show was recorded by Ivor Trueman of Freakbeat Magazine and Delerium Records, and was later released as ‘Incantation Live’ through Strawberry Recording Company.

Watercolour Records planned to release Sunray’s debut single ‘Love Will Find A Wave’ but unfortunately the label folded in 1994 and the record failed to appear.

In 1995, shortly before Lewis left to record sound for television and film, Acid Tapes released Sunray’s ‘Dreamachine Music’ EP. The main track ‘Music For The Dreamachine’ was re-recorded by Chambers and mixed by Sonic Boom at GCS, Rugby, in 1999.

‘Music For The Dreamachine’ was released as a one-sided 12” on Earworm Records in 2000, while the ‘Music For The Dreamachine EP’ was released by Strawberry Recording Company the following year. The releases received rave reviews, stateside airplay, and the title track was featured on the Channel Four series ‘Andy Warhol: the Complete Picture’.

During 2000 and 2001, Chambers recorded new Sunray material with Justin Morey, Bob Bhamra, Will Thomas and Nicola Chambers at Mother Studios, London, and Appletree Studios in Buckinghamshire.

New tracks included the Earworm single ‘Shake It’, ‘Fire Inside’ (featured on the ‘More Tell-Tale Signs of Earworm’ compilation), and ‘Song For Brion Gysin’ for Enraptured Records’ compilation ‘Bedroom Ambience 4’.

An LP collection of Sunray material ‘Retrospective In Stereo’ (RAPTLP43) was released in October 2004. The band launched the record with a party at Rota, Notting Hills Art Centre Club, on 23rd October 2004.

Sunray’s latest LP ‘Tomorrow’ was released in May 2007. Chambers is currently working on a variety of projects including a Sunray artefact for Strawberry Recording Co, an Oscillation remix and ‘Space Loops Volume 2’ a Data 70 release for Enraptured Records.
